Background of the Study

Shift work is a common practice in healthcare settings, including Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yola, where nurses are required to work during varying hours, including night shifts, weekends, and holidays (Nwachukwu et al., 2024). While shift work allows for continuous patient care, it has been linked to several health concerns, including mental and physical health issues among nurses. Shift work disrupts the body’s natural circadian rhythm, leading to sleep disturbances, fatigue, and increased stress, which can negatively affect nurses’ health (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). Additionally, irregular work hours and insufficient rest can impair cognitive functions, increasing the risk of burnout and reducing overall job satisfaction.

At FMC, Yola, nurses frequently work long hours, often juggling multiple shifts, which can exacerbate the effects of shift work on their well-being. Mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, as well as physical problems like musculoskeletal disorders and cardiovascular diseases, are common among healthcare workers who regularly engage in shift work (Oladipo et al., 2024). This study aims to assess the impact of shift work on the mental and physical health of nurses at FMC, Yola, and explore strategies to mitigate these effects.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of shift work in ensuring 24/7 patient care, its impact on nurses' mental and physical health is often overlooked. Nurses at FMC, Yola, may face significant health challenges as a result of irregular work hours, leading to potential long-term effects on their well-being and job performance. This study seeks to assess the impact of shift work on nurses’ health and propose solutions to mitigate its adverse effects.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the mental and physical health effects of shift work on nurses at FMC, Yola.
  2. To identify the specific health challenges faced by nurses who work rotating shifts.
  3. To recommend strategies to improve nurses’ health and well-being in the context of shift work.

Research Questions

  1. What are the mental and physical health effects of shift work on nurses at FMC, Yola?
  2. How does shift work contribute to mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, among nurses?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to mitigate the negative effects of shift work on nurses’ health?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Shift work leads to higher levels of stress, fatigue, and sleep disturbances among nurses.
  2. Nurses who work night shifts experience greater physical health problems compared to those who work day shifts.
  3. Implementing work-rest schedules and providing health interventions will reduce the negative effects of shift work on nurses' health.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working at FMC, Yola, and their health outcomes related to shift work. Limitations may include the reliance on self-reported health data and challenges in isolating shift work as the sole contributing factor to nurses' health issues.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Shift Work – A system where nurses work at different times of the day, including night shifts, weekends, and holidays, to provide continuous patient care.
  2. Mental Health – Psychological well-being, encompassing conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress.
  3. Physical Health – The well-being of the body, including physical conditions such as fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, and cardiovascular issues.
